CHSSA Executive Committee

Grotto’s Grand Slam, Lewes, DE
Welcome and Introductions Ed Murauskas Present are Ed Murauskas, President; Mary Beth D'Amico, Treasurer; Peggy Kirby, Negotiations Chair and CHHS Rep; Kathy Law, RES; Susan Krause, BMS; Diane Huff, MES; Jean Read, SEC; Woody Stocks, NGC; Jim Coverdale, NGC & CLC; Brenda Coverdale, HOB.
 Membership Walt Goering no report
Financial Planning - Mary Beth D'Amico Mary Beth and Kathy will visit Wilmington Trust soon and transfer a substantial amount of our funds into CD’s with staggering maturities.
Custodial Liaison Committee Jim Coverdale Jim agreed to ask for a meeting to discuss the differing time schedules custodians at each building were required to work on the recent snow days. Special concern exists with NGC & CHHS. Since they are considered one building with one Chief Custodian, why were CHHS custodians allowed to leave on Monday earlier than NGC custodians?
Election Committee Kathy Law, Susan Krause and Woody Stocks Kathy, Susan and Woody will bring to our next meeting a list of candidates for each officer position. Once the list receives the Executive Committee’s approval, they will make and distribute ballots and updated building rosters to the buildings by April 20. Those completed ballots should be collected by building representatives and brought to the May EC meeting where they will be counted. Ed reported that Joan Williamson, from HOB, has asked to be on the ballot as a secretary candidate. Jean Read volunteered to be Membership Chairperson next year. However, since that position is appointed by the President, Jean’s name need not appear on the ballot. She can be appointed after the election. Newly hired employees who join CHSSA in April MAY VOTE in this election.
Negotiations - Secretary Job Classification update Peggy Kirby CHSSA members gave their blessing to the Memorandum of Understanding presented at the last EC meeting. The Board approved it. But it now seems at least some technology technicians may also benefit from this memo based upon section 19:2.5 of the current contract.
19:2.5 Technology Technicians and Specialists will have separate schedules but will replicate the state and local salary schedules as follows: Technology Technicians will be paid on Maintenance Mechanic column of the state Custodial schedule and the Electrician/Plumber scale on the Cape Custodian schedule. Technology Specialists will be paid on the Skilled Craftsman column of the state Custodial schedule and the Electrician/
Plumber column of the Cape custodial schedule. In addition, Technology employees will receive additional stipends in the same amounts as those paid to secretarial employees (§1309 of Delaware Code) based upon training, college credits, clock hours, and certificates, the value for which and application to the stipend will be mutually determined by CHSSA and CHSD. The parties will renegotiate the issue of Technology pay if the state readjusts salary or conditions for Techs.
Member Concerns and Grievances Mary Beth D'Amico sent a letter to the transportation department documenting the drivers’ concerns over lost days. She received a reply almost immediately from Rosa Gillespie and forwarded that on to Evelyn Mills, who represents bus drivers. At this time there has been no response from Evelyn or any other driver.
For the good of the cause
➢ Peggy reminded all that many of our DEEDS Certifications will be expiring in the next few months. We should follow steps outlined by Mr. Best at last year’s April inservice for paras to enter our clock hours and maintain our certifications.
➢ Ed reported that the new high school will be opening fall, 2009 and, contrary to what was reported in the local news, the first student day will be September 8, 2009. This puts the last student day around June 18. News media had reported that this schedule was one of two options. The other option had students starting on August 31. Ed said the decision has been made for the September 8 start to give the high school staff more time to be settled in the new building.
➢ Ed also reported that Bob Fulton has confirmed that April 29, currently a scheduled day off for paras, is being offered as a CHIP day.
 Future Meeting Dates
➢ Wednesday, April 8
➢ Wednesday, May 13
➢ Wednesday, June 10
