May 13 '09 EC Meeting

Minutes of the Meeting of
CHSSA Executive Committee
Wednesday, May 13, 2009, 4:00 p.m.
Jake¿½¬¢s Seafood House, Rehoboth Beach, DE

¿½¿½    Welcome and Introductions ¿½¿½ Ed Murauskas ¿½¿½ Ed welcomed all and thanked those in attendance who, in addition to Ed, were the following:  Vice President Walt Goering, Treasurer Mary Beth D¿½¬¢Amico, MES representative Diane Huff, RES representative Kathy Law, BMS representative Susan Krause, RSE representatives Donna Hartnett and Faye Kintz, CHHS representative and Negotiations Chair Peggy Kirby.
Everyone have a great summer!

¿½¿½    Membership ¿½¿½ Walt Goering ¿½¿½ Building reps are reminded that their terms are for one year.  They need to conduct a vote at their buildings in September to elect (or re-elect) the 09-10 building rep.  An SEC staff member who works at another building MAY represent that building.
¿½¿½    Legislative Reception ¿½¿½ May 27 ¿½¿½ for Sussex County locals and legislators.  Wendy Kupcha of DSEA wendy.kupcha@dsea.org is spearheading this.  They¿½¬¢re asking each local for a donation to fund the food.  Pam Nichols of DSEA stated that PAC money can not be used for this purpose.  Peggy moved to approve the contribution of $100; Donna seconded the motion.  There being only one vote to the negative, the motion carried.
¿½¿½    Election Committee ¿½¿½ Kathy Law and Susan Krause  ¿½¿½ Woody Stocks not being present, Kathy and Susan counted the ballots and announced that the following members were voted into office for a two-year term:  Ed Murauskas, president; Walt Goering, vice president; Joan Williamson, secretary; Mary Beth D'Amico, treasurer.  In the only contested race, for vice president, Lisa Thorp received 31 votes to Walt Goering¿½¬¢s 52.
¿½¿½    Negotiations ¿½¿½ Peggy Kirby ¿½¿½ The negotiations team sent a copy of the MOU and an explanation to all district secretaries.  EC Members should have received copies of these.  The reaction from building secretaries has been disappointing.  The committee hopes this is a misunderstanding.  Susan moved to send copies of the MOU to all members as an addendum to their contracts and include with it an updated explanation.  Walt seconded the motion; the vote being unanimous, the motion carried.  Susan will help the negotiations team re-work the explanation of the MOU.
¿½¿½    Scholarships - Mary Beth D'Amico  - Three members applied for scholarships:
Lisa Thorp for daughter Shannon, graduating from CHHS
Ed Murauskas for daughter Alexis, graduating from CHHS
Delphine Rideau for daughter Jasmine, graduating from DCHS

¿½¿½    HCR Dinner ¿½¿½ May 5 ¿½¿½ We sent Dee Lott, Cindy McMahon and Bernadette Allen.  Peggy reported that Dee told her the evening was lovely, but she was disappointed that the student from Shields Elementary who was honored that evening was accompanied by only his family ¿½¿½ there was no representation from his school.
¿½¿½    Member Concerns and Grievances ¿½¿½
¿½¢    Upon hearing of Dee¿½¬¢s disappointment others reported disappointing staff turnouts in their buildings for activities which honor students but take place outside the school day.  Kathy proposed that we encourage our members to attend these activities to promote positive school relationships.
¿½¢    Ed attended a meeting this week with bus drivers and monitors to help clear up some confusion over a separate transportation-only summer RIF list.  Peggy said that the district and CHSSA agreed upon maintaining this list several years ago. Ed will look for documentation of that agreement and its specific language to help resolve this situation.  There is some question about the legality of such a list since it isn¿½¬¢t mentioned in the contract and it may or may not have been approved by the Board of Education.  Finding documentation of an agreement between the district and CHSSA would be helpful.  Tyrone Woodyard, who is currently assuming some transporation responsibilities, apparently spoke to Greg Weer (former Cape transportation supervisor) and determined that no such ¿½¬“transporation-only¿½¬¿½ list was used during his tenure at Cape.
¿½¿½    For the good of the cause ¿½¿½
¿½¢    Many of our DEEDS Certifications will be expiring in the next few months.  We should follow steps outlined by Mr. Best at last year¿½¬¢s April inservice for paras to enter our clock hours and maintain our certifications.  Once the DEEDS work is done on the computer, there is a ¿½¬“criminal background statement¿½¬¿½ that must be filed with the district.  THIS DOES NOT INVOLVE OBTAINING ANOTHER CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK and it must be completed after June 1.
¿½¢    Several support staff members throughout the district have suffered personal losses recently including Gail Stenger (CHHS guidance secretary), whose father died; Cindy Brittingham (CHHS custodian) whose son died; and Kate Lingo (CHHS secretary) whose brother died.
¿½¿½    Future Meeting Dates ¿½¿½ Ed moved and Susan seconded a motion to cancel our June 10 meeting.  Officers will meet in August to plan the agenda for the General Membership Meeting on the district-wide inservice day in September.  Motion carried.  E
