CHSSA Executive
Board Meeting
Minutes
June 6th,
2012
Ed
Murauskas opened the meeting with a moment of silence in memory of Betty Gooch,
the first President of CHSSA.
Ed
thanked everyone for coming and their continued support of CHSSA. The following members were in attendance; Ed,
Joan Williamson, Diane Huff, Molly Siple, Lisa Thorp, Peggy Kirby, Susan
Krause, Brenda Coverdale, Joe Kirk, Roger Boyd, Mary Beth D’Amico, and Woody
Stocks.
Treasurer’s
Report: A bank statement for this month had not been
received to date, however Mary Beth reported that we have $6,267.20 in our bank
account, and that 5 scholarships were awarded this year to senior students of
members.
Negotiations: Discussions continue and the Bargaining team
will meet again with the CHSD team on June 12th.
Membership/Early
Enrollment: Joan commented that we have 135 members to
date which is less than half of the support staff totaling 338. Molly turned in 2 new members applications
for early enrollment and explained that she was hopeful to have a few more by
year end. We need to build
enrollment. Building reps were given
copies of perks and benefits of becoming a member along with the fact that
being a member costs only $1.05 per day, $15.75 per pay check – a bargain by
anyone’s standards. Non-members can take
advantage of early enrollment now and receive all the perks and discounts of
membership, but will not be charged dues till September. Each building rep was given early enrollment
forms and encouraged to hand deliver them to non members within their
building. Joan will ask transportation
if we can talk with the bus drivers on their opening in service day. We also would like to invite all Support
Staff to our opening meeting on August 29th at CHHS. Lisa Thorp will research finding a room for
us that will accommodate all of us.
New Shirts: Mary Beth explained that new shirt samples
will be available at our opening meeting for people to decide which size and
color they would like to have. New
members will receive their shirts free.
For any existing members who would like to purchase a shirt, CHSSA will
pay $10.00 toward the $25.00 cost.

ESP Dinner: Kathy Law, Susan Krause, and Lisa Thorp will
chair this year’s dinner. They will also
have 3 bids ready for our September meeting so a vote can be taken and we will
have plenty of time to advertise the dinner.
The dinner will be on Wednesday, November 14th.
Evaluations: It was explained that evaluations of Para’s
is not consistent throughout the district.
Some building administrators do not observe their staff prior to
evaluating, others do. Some building
administrators choose to count excused absences against the employees overall
performance while others do not.
Joe
Kirk agreed, there should be a more consistent approach to evaluating all
Para’s regardless of building administrator.
He also suggested that attendance might not belong on evaluation forms
at all. This item will be followed up by
Joe and officers with the D.O.
Upcoming
Elections: Joe explained how important this fall’s
senate election will be to members.
There is a big possibility that because of the new 6th Senate
District that the dynamics of our legislature could change. He asked for volunteers to help with phone
calls etc in the fall. All training will
be provided.
Building
reps were encouraged to solicit their members for help.
Grievance
Processing: Joe explained that we should consider having
a Grievance Committee to represent members when needed. At present we are using the President, Ed, which
is increasing his work load. This needs
to be looked at again, with suggestions on good candidates for this committee.
For
the good of the cause: Peggy
Kirby is retiring this year. In tribute
to her 26 years of service to CHSSA,
students and the community of Cape, Ed presented her with a plaque thanking her
for all she has generously contributed to the benefit of others.
We
will be sending condolences to Betty Gooch when her obituary is printed and her
family’s wishes are known. Get well
cards will be sent to both Dwayne Sheppard and Jane Carey.
